About Croatia
The real name of Croatia on Croatian is Hrvatska, pronounced [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]).
Croatia’s coast lies entirely on the Adriatic Sea and it has 1246 Islands, isles and inlets of which only 48 are populated.
The oldest Slavic script was Glagolitic script used by Croatians, it dates from 9th century.
Dubrovnik is most famous Croatian city for centuries, famous Irish playwright Bernard Shaw named it „The Pearl of the Adriatic“.
Popular HBO series Game of Thrones was filmed there.
There are names of two famous Croatian scientists on the map of the moon, J.R. Boskovic an A. Mohorovicic.
Famous inventor Nikola Tesla was borne in Croatia in village Smiljan.
Croatians invented origin of the modern necktie which can be traced back to 17th century when it was worn by Croat soldiers serving French Army, and also invented mechanical pencil, dactylography (the method of using fingerprints for identification), the parachute and the torpedo.
World popular dog breed called Dalmatians origin back to 17th century Croatia.
Almost 10 % of Croatia is made up of 11 nature parks, eight national parks and two nature reserves. World famous is National Park Plitvice Lakes characterized by 16 interconnected lakes and spectacular waterfalls.
World’s first Sea Organ that is played by the sea’s rhythmic waves is in Zadar, it is part art installation, part musical instrument, part architectural project, and part engineering experiment.

Sport has significant role in Croatian culture, the most enduring sport by far is football, but also other team sports ass handball, basketball, water polo, as well as some individual sports like tennis, alpine skiing, swimming and table tennis. Most popular amateur sports game is picigin played at the beach.
Croatia is home to what was once the smallest town in the world called “Hum” which has population of only 17 people.
